Abstract: This seminar presents notable variations in the provisions for axial compression limits of
reinforced concrete columns stipulated by different design codes. The effect of axial compression
on varioustypes of RC columns isrevisited through both theoretical investigations and a statistical
analysis of 475 column specimens. The findings indicate that the displacement capacity of RC
columns under reversed cyclic loading decreases significantly with increasing axial compression.
The displacement capacity can be enhanced by providing a greater quantity of confining
reinforcement. Based on insights from both theoretical and statistical studies, the seminar
concludes with design recommendations for the seismic design of RC columns, with particular
emphasis on appropriate axial compression limits.
