課程目標:

Realizing how to apply numerical analysis methods to solve geotechnical engineering problems.

課程內容概要:

This course includes four sections, such as introduction, numerical analysis method with discontinuum approaches, general theory of discontinuous deformation analysis and simulation of the discontinuous rock mass behavior, and the primary contents of each section are shown as follows:

1. INTRODUCTION: Case studies will be used to explain the importance of using numerical analysis methods to solve geotechnical problems.

2. BASIC THEORETICAL MECHANICS: Equilibrium, strain compatibility, virtual work, minimizing potential energy etc.

3. NUMERICAL ANALYSIS METHOD WITH DISCONTINUUM APPROACHES: The well-known numerical analysis methods with discontinuum approaches, such as Discrete Finite Element Method (DFEM), Rigid-body Spring Method (RBSM), Distinct Element Method (DEM) and Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) will be discussed.

4. GENERAL THEORY OF DISCONTINUOUS DEFORMATION ANALYSIS: Similar to the FEM, the minimizing of potential energy is applied to generate the global matrix. However, the topologyis applied to govern the calculations of integration and contact judgments. In this section, the general theory of DDA will be introduced.

5. SIMULATION OF THE DISCONTINUOUS ROCK MASS BEHAVIOR: Several case studies will be used to investigate the using of discrete numerical methods to solve geotechnical problems. The case studies are shown below:

(1) Predicting the hazardous area of the slope avalanche: Introducing the back analysis process using Limit Equilibrium Method to assess the strength parameter of the sliding surface, and the predicting the hazardous area of the slope avalanche using discrete numerical analysis method.

(2) Simulating the behavior of jointed rock mass during tunnel construction: Investigating the displacement and stress distribution of tunnel excavation in jointed rock mass using laboratory tests and discrete numerical methods.

(3) Simulating the slope toppling: Introducing the slope toppling simulation using DDA.
